Paper Blooms with Paperclay®

Hi Everyone, Lori here and I so excited to share a great new tutorial with you using Paperclay®. I'm going to show you how easy it is to create these elegant flower/blooms.

First step is to gather the supplies above

Roll out a thin sheet of Paperclay® and cut out your flower petal. This is actually a die cut used for making sugar paste flowers and you can find them in many larger craft stores.

Layer two petals and press down with ball tool. This will make the flower cup inward.

Pinch your third petal inward and glue into the center of your flower.

Flower before coloring

Spray your flower with base coat of glimmer mist.

Take a paint brush and sprinkle wet flower with fairy dust

Spray again with glimmer mist to make the fairy dust run and blend.

Let dry and you have a beautiful finished flower to add to your projects.

Switch Plate Cover Using Articus Studio™

For this project I needed to use a mold from Articus Studio - I chose the Frozen Charlotte Mold.

Materials:
Creative Paperclay® Modeling Materials
Articus Studio™
Stamp
Fondant Roller
Switch Plate Cover
Terri Sproul's Mixers

Roll out the clay and stamp the clay (I used a Close to my Heart Daisy Stamp)

Trim the clay to fit around the switch plate

Form the clay around the switch plate

Add the molded dolls to the switch plate and paint (I used Terri Sproul's Mixers)

Creative Paperclay® and Articus Studio Molds!

This month I had the opportunity to use Creative Paperclay® with an Articus Studio™ mold. I choose to use the Frozen Charlotte Art Doll Mold as I love adding them in my art. Finding them can be a challenge, once you find one they can be pretty expensive. If you have priced a Frozen Charlotte lately you would know what I mean. So, now I am able to make them as needed with Creative Paperclay® for my projects.

First, take a ball of Creative Paperclay® and press into the mold. It is very important to work the areas that have deeper depressions, like the feet and face. Once you have filled the mold then set aside to dry, at least overnight (12-24 hours) in the mold, depending on humidity.

Once released if they are cool to the touch they are still damp. Let them set another 12-24 hours to completely dry.

When the Frozen Charlotte is dry, prepare for use. With an emery board or small file clean up the edges of the doll. Then with a bit of ink add a little color to age it. Seal it, this one was sealed with USArtQuest PPA Matte. Sealing product depends on the project and the effect you are after.

Recently I read in one of the Stampington magazines about a technique using paper napkins in mixed media projects. I saw this beautiful Kleenex packet with the Eiffel Tower and thought "wonder if they would work," as they say, the rest is history.

Separate the tissue layers of the Kleenex or napkin. There are usually three layers of tissue. The first is easy to separate. Getting the second and third apart can be tricky. Be sure to separate. If left in tack the extra layer of tissue could cause problems when adhering.

Prepare canvas with USArtQuest PPA Matte adhesive. The first layer of paper on the canvas is old sheet music adhered with USArt Quest PPA Matte. Be sure to spread the PPA it evenly on the top and sides of the canvas. Let it set. Then spread a second layer of USArt Quest PPA Matte.

Carefully lay your tissue on the surface of your canvas. Once the tissue makes contact with the glue it is in place, trying to move the tissue will rip it. Make nice crisp corners, you may need additional adhesive. Carefully paint the PPA Matte over the surface of the tissue. Let it set to dry.

While the canvas is setting cut lace (3 1/4"), long enough to wrap around the back. Stamp Viva Las Vegastamps! sentiment "I Love Paris in the Springtime!" Earlier I had cut small hearts from Creative Paperclay®, paint one burgundy, any craft paint will do and let dry.

Once the adhesive is barely tacky, cover the canvas with Sakura Crystal Lacquer, attach the lace and "I Love Paris." Also, the Creative Paperclay® Frozen Charlotte and heart. Cover the heart with Sakura Crystal Lacquer. Set aside to dry overnight!

Finished it is a perfect little gift for that person that loves Paris!!!

I'm A Little Teapot Mini Canvas

This month the Creative Paperclay® design team paired up with Articus Studio and I have the CUTEST thing to share with you!!!!!

I chose the Dollie Dangles Flexible Art Mold, which makes six faces, three sets of feet /shoes, one set of hands, one purse and one crown. These pieces are the perfect size for making ATC’s, ornaments or adding to journal pages or cards. The mold even comes with a handy little chart that shows you approximately how much clay is needed for each space on the mold.

I am downsizing so I decided to take all of my wood mounted rubber stamps off of the wood to save on space. As soon as I picked up my teapot stamp, the song "I'm A Little Teapot" popped into my head. I had just received my Articus Mold in the mail and I immediately envisioned the little hands and head attached to the teapot!

I molded all of the pieces I needed out of Creative Paperclay® air dry modeling material and painted them with acrylic craft paint. I also created a teapot out of Creative Paperclay® by pressing a rubber stamp into rolled out clay. I added color to the canvas using Distress Ink, added embellishments and attached them to a 3 X 3 canvas with a flat screw and bolt. I left the bolt a little bit loose so the teapot can still be turned. I attached her legs and sealed the text with natural bee's wax. You can watch the full video tutorial below :D

Isn’t she soooooooooooo cute?! I plan to make several more of these because I just LOVE the way she turned out.

Dangling Dolly Postcards made with DelightTM

When I heard that the Creative Paperclay® design team would be working with art molds from Articus Studio, I was thrilled. I chose the Dollie Dangles Flexible Art Mold.

I had several ideas of what to do with my Dollie Dangles mold, but then I came across the International Mixed Media Postcard Swap. And the mold was cast, lol! The swap requires 10 Postcards, which seems a lot, but I knew I could do up all 10 quickly and easily using my Articus mold. The most time required would be the drying time for the Delight™, and in folding the Origami outfits I had in mind.

I decided to use Delight™, another Creative Paperclay® product, because it dries to an extremely light weight. I won’t be able to send these as postcards, because they’ll be too bulky and I wanted to keep postage costs down

Supplies:

1 oz. Delight™

Dollie Dangles Flexible Art Mold

10 Postcards (not shown)

10 Pompoms for Hair

20 sheets of Origami Paper for Outfits

White Glue

Ceramcoat paints-Black, Antique White, Raspberry, and Bright Citrus

Byzantia Paints-Seraphym, Illuminata and Cardinale

Small paint brush

Even smaller brush tip for painting eyes

A toothpick or two

Scissors

The Dolly Dangles mold comes with an instruction sheet that tells you the approximate amounts of clay product that you will need.

Molding the Pieces

Before pressing the Delight™ into the mold shapes, I rolled it into a smooth ball to avoid creases in the finished piece. To even the pieces, I rolled a toothpick across the top to flatten it out, then used the toothpick tip to cut away excess, and smooth the edges.

After the Delight™ dried, it was easy to flex the mold so each piece would pop loose, and I could just pick it out.

The Outfits

While the Delight™ was drying, I folded Origami outfits for my Dangle Dollies. I sort of made up my own patterns based on basic Kimono and dress folds that I learned long ago. You can find a similar Kimono pattern at Make a Kimono Girl, and a similar dress pattern at The Origami Club.

Painting The Dollies

To get flesh color paint, I mixed a little Antique White, Raspberry, and Bright Citrus paints, and painted the faces, hands, legs and feet.

The eyes were outlined in black, and a touch of raspberry added a blush for the lips and cheeks.

I used the jewel toned Byzantia paints on the eyes, boots, thongs, fingernails and toenails.

The next step was to pick which Origami outfits went best with the colors on each postcard. The postcards I picked up for this project had some awesome artwork, and I wanted to complement the colors as much as possible.

The last step before gluing everything together was to cut out bits of the pompoms so they would fit the heads. I had a little trouble trimming them flat enough because they wanted to fall apart if I cut very much. My faces were pushed out a bit, which made it difficult to photo the postcards.

I was able to whip all 10 post cards out in three days, with only a few hours work on my part.

Password Journal on Lock-down

Hi Everyone, it's Robyn here today. This month I've been busily creating these handy little password journals. They measure 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" and fit nicely into a shirt pocket, handbag or small desk space. Now, you would want to use discretion with these when storing sensitive passwords depending on your circumstances but they work great for all of the groups, sites and blogs that we seem to find ourselves needing to recall log-in information for. Great for the kiddos, too!

Here is what I came up with...

I've used an Articus Studio mold called Key to My Heart, Large to create the heart-shaped lock and key. I added my Creative Paperclay into the mold and left it to dry overnight. I then painted the lock and key using pink acrylic paint and then dry brushed on some vintage white acrylic paint.

This is what the inside pages look like. I just typed it up on my computer using Microsoft Word.

Then used my Bind-it-all to create the book

The label for the front were also created on my computer. I then used a die to cut out the label.

This is a fun, quick project and make great little gifts. Hope you give them a try!

Butterfly pick

My daughter is expecting her second child and I am so excited for that event. I am in charge of her baby shower and I wanted to make it special and use my own creations instead of buying them. Today I am going to show you the first of a few things I am making. Her theme for baby Alexis is butterflies and fairies and today I am showing you what I did for the butterflies.

I had a stamp of a butterfly that I absolutely love and decided I wanted to see if I could make a mold of it and make it as beautiful as the stamp is. I then pressed my Creative Paperclay® into the mold and since I tend to let my clay's stay in the mold and dry overnight the underside was still a bit wet when I took it out of the mold. I took it out of the mold gently and just let it dry to it's fullest. The reason I leave my clay in the molds to dry is so I won't distort the clay before it has had time to dry at least a bit. After it has completely dried I took my dremel tool with a sanding bit and shaped all the rough edges and try to get as much detail as possible. You can use sandpaper or even an emery board as I used to until hubby bought the dremel for me. This cuts down on time for me.

Then I painted the piece. I used plum acrylic paint and I filled the crevices

with dimension medium and sprinkled pink glitter on top of that for glitz.

(I wish the picture were better because

it really is gorgeous in real life)

Using my dremel again I bored a hole into the back of the

butterfly and hot glued a bamboo skewer into it.

This was so easy to make and I can decorate them

in any color to match any decor.

India meets Steam Punk

I really didn't know what this was going to end up like.... I mean mixing two different cultures together.... I must be nuts!!!

I went to India in 1993.... I must say for a first trip ever from New Zealand, it really impacted my life. Seeing all the different culture aspects and the way people lived etc.... That country is amazing and its people are beautiful and creative too.

This piece is dedicated to the people of that amazing country.

This was only possible by using the Articus Mold - Caboshapes II Divas

and Delight TM clay.

Here is how I made it:

I pressed the Delight Clay into the mold. And popped the clay out carefully to get several shapes the same.... Then let the clay dry. Delight has a polystyrene feel to it when dry.

I got some flower soft wire out and poked it through the shoulders and attached some hand shapes.

I wrapped some ribbon around the body and pinned it at the back. This clay is so soft it allows to be poked and pinned. So cool!

next is when I got out my inks and a water brush then coloured the pieces I needed to colour. Adding glitter only to the crown.

The next step was to glue it all together.... I added the hair (black wool) Glue used was a hot glue gun...

add face... and more hair

Then prepare the base that you will glue it onto....

I used 1" squares, a piece of paper doily and inked the edges....

I then added some cogs made with Delight TM and flowers etc....

Don't for get some bling in the form of glitter glue...

and there you are....Project done!

You Are Just a Girl. Say Nothing.

Hello, Creative Paperclay® fans! This is Jingle and today I am bringing you a slightly darker art piece than normal, however, it is what I was inspired to create, so I followed that muse and created exactly what it was leading me to create. I began with one of the wonderful Frozen Charlotte Mold from Articus Studio to create the focal point of my piece.

To begin, distress an oversized playing card with sand paper and ink. Layer papers to create the base for your piece.

Mold your Charlotte doll and allow to dry for 2-3 days. Press the mouth area gently to flatten and essentially eliminate the mouth prior to drying. Paint with Luminarte Twinkling H2O's. This gives her a shimmer that suits her femininity.

Assemble the piece and add text.

You see, in much of the world women are still seen as a lesser being. They are told to keep quiet. To speak only when spoken to. To hold only the opinions of their fathers and husbands. Even here in countries where this is not obvious like the US, UK, and the like... we often find that many women are STILL, to this day, in these free and modern countries, put down and thought less of simply for being female. This piece speaks out against such treatment. It calls attention to the problem and forces us to face it. Woman are strong. Woman are capable. Woman are equal.

A Valentine Creative Paperclay® Delight Clay Project

It’s hard to believe that Valentine’s Day is just right around the corner. This project turned out so cute I thought you might want to make something at least similar to it for someone special in your life. To start with I took some little hearts that I had and made a mold of them. I then filled them with Delight Clay, waited for them to start drying and then popped them out to finish drying. (They dry quicker when they’re out of the mold).

Once dry I painted them red and white. I took an 8X10 canvas board, spritzed it with some paint, used some Mod Podge and attached some green fiber, paper, string, words, flowers and my cute little hearts. Take a look at the final project and tell me what you think.

You can change the idea, use the Delight Clay in a different way etc. I’ve got to say this is one of the few times that I’ve used the Delight Clay but have to say it’s great for Mixed Media such as this or for scrapbooking or card making. It is so light weight, it takes detail amazingly and takes paint well. This project would look very nice on a little stand which is what I plan to put it on.

The design team from Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material, was lucky to get to choose a mold from Articus Studio Design to play with! They have so many cool molds, I had a hard time making up my mind, but finally decided on the Cameos Flexible Rubber Art Mold.

I used the Delight™ air dry modeling compound, and pushed it into the mold and let it dry before I removed it. I used the new Terri Sproul Mixers/Sakura Crystal Lacquer to color the cameo, with an elegant, Old World feel.

I can see so many possibilities for these molds - jewelry, home decor, any kind of paper craft....

I hope you will check them out and give them a try. You will love how they work with the Creative Paperclay!

U Make Me Bloom

Have you ever had someone in your life that well....just makes it better? I'm so lucky to say my sister Gini is one of those people in my life. This layout is all about her.

I adored using the mold to create these PaperClay faces. Don't they just make the layout!!!

I was able to also create some smaller faces that I nestled down in the die cut flowers and leaves. The faces were all colored with a mixture of watercolor pencils, distress inks, blender pens and a hair of smooch. I love the way they came out and hope you do to. The molds are so beautiful and have so much detail so the two paired together are perfect.

The Cheshire Cat

Hi, folks! Jingle here! Today I am SO excited to share a super fun project I created with Creative Paperclay® and some gorgeous Luminarte watercolor paints!

Meet...the Cheshire Cat!

I created him by starting with a foam ball split in half for the base and then built up with foil from that to create the basic shape I was looking for.

From there, I covered the foil with Creative Paperclay® and formed the tail portion over a length of wire pushed into the base of the cat. I allowed this to dry for two days before proceeding.

I sanded gently before painting. I first applied the stripes using Luminarte Twinkly H2O's. This gives the Cheshire Cat a wonderful shimmer!

The final step was to add the distinctive toothy grin and spirited eyes using white paint (Sharpie paint pen) and black marker.

I just love the way he turned out! And he sits quite happily along side his friend, The Mad Hatter!

Creative Paperclay® Time Flies!!!

What I love most about Creative Paperclay® is... if I cannot find an embellishment for a project be it a card, assemblage, wall art I can always make it from Creative Paperclay®!

First create molds using mold putty from found objects then cast the Creative Paperclay® and allow to dry. For this project I made: pocket watch, column and a frozen Charlotte.

Believe it or not... this book is a found item. The pages had already been cut out when I found it! Lucky for me. The cut pages were wired together, which made it easy to work with. I white washed the back inside cover with a light coating of gesso, then spritzed with Stewart Superior Memories Mist: Silver and Iridescent.

Stamped background images on tissue and adhered to the back of the book.

Adhere the pages to the back cover of the book and painted a little gesso around the outside edges of the pages.

The Creative Paperclay™ column was aged with brown ink, then place in the window box. Stamped the border of the window box with the print pattern and added a bit of paper ephemera.

The Creative Paperclay® pocket watch was painted gold and the the clock faces and spinner with brad were added.

Final touch to the pocket watch are the plastic eye lashes for wings, adhere to book. Distress the alpha dice with Memories Black Ink and adhere!

Add the bird on tissue to the border, a little bit of cut doily and the word "flies" using Tim Holtz letter. Add a dash of blitz with Stickles on the doily.

Touch up with gold paint around the pages, a bit of gold distressing on the frame, Paris clay piece and my Creative Paperclay® frozen Charlotte.

I collect fairies and other lady figurines and I am really starting to appreciate art dolls of all kinds, but I am not usually drawn to mermaids. They are beautiful and I love the way they look but I don't normally collect them. However, I am currently working on two different art courses that both heavily feature mermaids, so needless to say, I have been on a mermaid kick.

I have been collecting mermaidesque tid bits to use in upcoming paintings and journal pages and I even collected seashells on the beach while I was on vacation in San Diego to use in a painting I am planning.

This recently awakened mermaid obsession even inspired my Creative Paperclay® design team project for the month. I decided to alter a basic Barbie doll and turn her into an OOAK mermaid art doll and I *LOVE* the way she turned out! I like it so much, I will even be displaying her in the curio with my other favorite lady figurines :D

Be sure to watch the full tutorial in the video below, but here are the basics...

Start with any Barbie of your choice. Mine happened to have blue hair and her 'bathing suit' was plastic and made her body.

Using Creative Paperclay® air dry modeling material completely encase her legs to form a mermaid tail.

Create her fin using wire and fabric and insert it into the end of her tail

Add hair extensions made from inexpensive hair weave

Paint and embellish however you like. Viola'!!!!

I used two different kinds of Paperclay on this project. Her tail is made from Creative Paperclay® air dry modeling material and her seashell embellishments are made from Delight® air dry modeling material.

The Delight® has a puffier texture than the Creative Paperclay® which was perfect for this project. I suggest you try both products for yourself because they do feel very different and can be used together to create unique contrast on your projects.

Good Morning
Today I am going to show you another project using Creative Paperclay® and a stamp. A while back we were given an opportunity to order some stamps from VivaLasVegas Stamps and I went a bit overboard. I love stamps and of course using it with the clay opens another new world.

I rolled out my clay at about 1/4 inch thickness and stamped the dartboard image onto the clay using a black ink.

Then I trimmed the access around the image before

it dried. I wanted just the image

After the clay piece was completely dried, I placed

it on a measuring cup inside another cup and poured

a mixture of the Amazing Clear Cast over the top

This will give it a shiny and sturdy coat so I can toss

this inside of my dartcase as a good luck charm.

See how shiny it got? And now the resin cast

will also protect the clay piece.

Creative Paperclay® Heart pendant

With Valentines on its way my head is filled with hearts so this month I'm going to create an easy but very pretty Heart pendant using Creative Paperclay®.

Material list:
Creative Paperclay®
wire - for the bail
tool to stamp in your texture
acrylic paints

1. Make a paperclay ball, about the size of a walnut. Actually, the amount of clay you use really depends on the size you want your finished piece so play around. If you use too much simply make the ball smaller and reshate again.

2. Start shaping the clay into a heart. I first roll the ball in my hands to form a cone shape and then squish and moosh the clay into a heart shape. This is play time so have fun and don't worry if your heart isn't a perfectly shaped heart. I kinda like the wonky look, I think it gives the pendant more character.

3. Insert your wire bail into the top of your pendant. Since mine is a wonky heart I inserted the bail so the heart will hang at an angle.

4. Next we stamp in our texture. I used a leather stamping tool for my texture but you can use whatever you have handy. Stamp the texture deep enough to make it look like it's inside the heart, not on the surface of the heart.

5. Once you get the look you like let the pendant completely dry. What? We're done? Yep, how easy is this! :)

6. After it dries completely you can paint it . I started by painting the entire pendant black. I then dry-brushed metalic gold and red. That gives the pendant an aged look that I love. After the paint dried I sprayed a couple of layers of polyurathane on it to protect the paint. All that's left to do is sting it on a cord or ribbon and you have a beautiful heart to wear.

Creative Paperclay® Embellishments for Cards!

Use Creative Paperclay® to create light weight embellishments for your handmade greeting cards.

I love vintage Valentines and have a large collection of them. This time of year I love using them to make the Valentines to give to my special friends! For this card I used a couple of with a sewing theme. I wanted a little something extra on the card to give it some dimension, so I made a half spool of thread for the card.

Supplies:

Creative Paperclay®

Mold Compound

Spool

Brown ink

Embroidery floss

Valentines

GLitter Glue

Doily

Card stock for card base

Pattern paper for background

First, I made a mold using a spool. Pictured is the mold with Creative Paperclay® drying in the mold. I like to give my items at least a few hours to dry (sometimes 24 depending on the thickness of the object.) Once the spool was dry I inked it. Then wrapped it with embroidery thread (to look like a thread.)

Fussy cut the Valentines. Attach the pattern paper to the card base, then the doily, and Valentines. Using Tacky glue attach the spool of thread.

Add a little glitter glue to the dress and hair bow.

The Valentine is complete...

Love Cast in Clay!

Balloon Dog...

Have you ever been walking along and spotted someone creating animal shapes out of balloons? To me, it is so much fun to watch. After all, you start out with a latex tube that is often times full of the air we don't need anymore! Unless of course someone wants to make floating balloon animals. ;) Well, that is the inspiration for today's Creative Paperclay project.I've used Delight air dry modeling compound; which is really nice to work with...
Start off with a ball that is about 1" in diameter and break off pieces as seen below.
These will form our dog's various pieces.
Mold them into a cylinder shape. One larger and 8 smaller pieces about the size of a Tic-Tac.
I've used craft wire to stick the pieces together. I let it dry over night and then reinforced the wire with some Glossy Accents by Ranger.
Paint as desired and add some glaze for a nice shine.

Voila! There you have it. Long after the balloon is gone, you can have this little guy as a reminder or bring a smile to someone on a dreary day.

Delightful Dart

Good morning,

today I am here to show you another fabulous idea using paper clay. For this project I used the Delight air dry modeling compound. I love using this stuff because it is so light and fluffy. I especially like using it for my scrapbooking and cardmaking because of that reason.

So I started off using a dart

to make my mold.

I added the Delight clay to the

mold and let it sit for about 30 minutes

and then unmolded it.

Here you see the mold, dart

before it completely dried, I

trimmed it down a bit with a

regular pair of scissors. That's

another reason I love this delight

so much, it's soooo soft.

Then I painted the barrel gold, the tip black and the shaft purple with some acrylic paints and

split a flight in half and glued it to the top of the dart.

Now I can either turn this into a pin to wear (very light) or I might add it to a scrapbook page about my

dart tournament I am playing in this weekend.

I just love all the fun things I can do with paperclay.

Alice in Wonderland Canvas

This project is for my Son's preschool. They have looked after both my children while I worked part time and now my last is off to school! I can't believe my little man is 5yrs old this month! New Zealand school year starts Feb - Dec with 4 four terms broken up in 8-10 week lots. Holidays in between. I know its all complicated aye. lol

How-To Make Snowflake Earrings

A special Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material Project for today (I am switching with another one of my Design Team Teammates). This project was inspired by winter and the thoughts of a White Christmas, something that doesn't happen very often in the south. I also figured if I did the snowflakes I could wear it longer than if I did Christmas Stuff.

Materials:
Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material
Fondant Roller
Exacto Knife
Sandpaper
Snowflake Mold
Snowflake Stamp
Liquitex Iridescent Gel Medium
Studio G Silver and Light Blue Glitter Glue
6 Seed Beads
2 Jump Rings
2 Fish Hook Earrings
Round Pliers

1. Roll out clay to an even thickness.

2. Push clay into mold.

3. Trim while in mold. Allow to dry for about 10 minutes in the mold this will help the clay keep its shape upon removal.

4. Unmold clay piece and repeat steps 1 - 3 as many times as needed.

5. Allow pieces to dry 24 hours. Trim with Exacto Knife, sand edges, make hole for jump ring and paint.

6. Add beads to jump rings and fish hooks.

Mastiff Puppy with Creative Paperclay®

Mastiff Puppy with Creative Paperclay®

I wasn’t sure I could pull this project off.

My husband and I once had the honor to belong to two mastiffs, Liam and Cedric. They're both gone now and for Christmas, I wanted to do a statue of one of them, based on a photograph taken when they were puppies.

That photograph posed a few problems.

The boys were very difficult to photo, because their faces were so dark. I couldn’t see their backs, and didn’t have any other photos of them in this particular pose. And the perspective in my chosen photo was odd. It was taken looking down as they looked up.

But it’s my husband’s favorite photo, so I decided to give this a try, and just accept that proportions would be wonky.

Supplies:

Creative Paperclay®

Masking tape

One 3-inch Styrofoam balls

Three 2-inch Styrofoam balls

Five 1-inch Styrofoam balls

A tool that will dig a narrow line into the clay

Slip (Creative Paperclay® kept in water so it’s like a paste-about half a finger length’s worth)

White Glue

Acrylic paint & brushes
A reference photo

Obviously, anyone using this tutorial will be using their own dog, so you may need to adjust the number of Styrofoam balls. The number will differ according to bone structure and pose of your dog. Don’t hesitate to cut or shave the Styrofoam to get a better shape.

In essence, my steps boil down to this:

The general body shape and bone structure is built with the Styrofoam balls.

I flesh in the body mass with the tape.

Surface texture and detail is added with the Creative Paperclay®.

My puppies were built like baby tanks with a bone structure meant to explode into massive size, so I wanted knobby knees, and a rudder-like chest. I loosely taped the Styrofoam balls together and un-taped them, trying different combinations. Several of the balls needed to be cut in half or shaved down a bit to get the proportions I thought were correct.

Using glue on each ball, I started taping more securely, and kept going until I had the body fleshed in. Once I’d wrapped down the Styrofoam securely, I used short strips of tape that wouldn’t bunch up too much as I curved them into the shape I wanted.

Just before I added the first layer of Creative Paperclay®, I slathered the puppy in white glue and slathered the layer on thinly for a base.

During this part of the process, I kept the container of slip nearby, with lots of water to wet my hands. I kept both my hands and the Creative Paperclay® wet, the whole time.

I worked the large surfaces first, that didn’t require much detail, until I was satisfied with the proportions. Then I the molded ridges where the puppy’s hair pushed up.

Once the toes were added, I started working on the face—the make or break part of this piece.

I used the clay tool to carve out eye sockets and nostrils, then alternately layered strips of clay, and carved out wrinkles and the dewflaps of the muzzle.

I’m wasn't happy with the eyes, but decided to move on. I didn’t want to fixate on any one area. It's important to keep the whole piece in perspective.

The ears are the last thing I added. They are sturdy enough once the clay is dry, but easily damaged while wet.

Once I was satisfied, I set the puppy on a couple of plastic containers, for a better air flow, and waited for the Creative Paperclay® to dry.

I painted the puppy completely with an Autumn Brown, let it dry, then roughly brushed over it with Antique White. I used good old black on the face, but let some of the brown show through a bit. Metallic blue was brushed lightly, over the black, for the nose, and I finished with a touch of raspberry for the nostrils, mouth, inner ears and around the eyes.

The eyes. I'm happy over all with this piece, except for the eyes. Time ran out, and Christmas happened. I gave the puppy to my husband, explaining that I was going to get some fake eyes and use them, once I found the right size. He says the piece is perfect, and wants me to leave it alone.

We’ll see. The nice thing is that I can still go back, and work further if I need to.

A New Project with Creative Paperclay® and Viva Las Vegas Stamps!

I hope that everyone had a Very Merry Christmas and got to enjoy special time with loved ones. I had a wonderful Christmas and still have one of our sons and his wife and one of the children still visiting with us. I did however take a little time out to make a couple of pieces today using Creative Paperclay® and Viva Las Vegas Stamps. I lost a couple of pictures along the way but I think you’ll get the idea. To start with I used:

Yep, Creative Paperclay® and Viva Las Vegas Stamps. After kneading the clay a bit to condition it, I rolled it out pretty thin(1/4 inch) with a fondant roller that I use. I then dusted my stamp with powder and placed it over the clay. I used my roller to roll the stamp into the clay and then lifted it off of the clay. Using an X acto knife I trimmed the excess clay from around the stamped image and set the clay aside to dry.

Once the clay was dry I used acrylic paints and glitter to color and enhance it and here’s what I ended up with:

Didn’t that turn out just beautiful? Trust me, the pictures don’t do it justice. While I was working on this combo of Creative Paperclay® and Viva Las Vegas Stamps I also used the same process to create another piece:

Delightful Eggs with Viva Las Vegastamps!

This month, Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material has had the chance to play with Viva Las Vegastamps! When I was picking out my stamps, I had a mixed media piece in mind, with a chicken theme. I have to admit, it just didn't turn out how I planned, so I made a fun card with my own egg embellishments.

I used the Children with Cat and Chickens stamp. I love how it looks like a vintage photo, but it really is a stamp! To make my eggs, I rolled out some Delight™ Air Dry Modeling Compound into an egg shape, let it dry a little bit, and then, sliced the back off so it would lie flat on my card.
I colored the eggs with Distress Stains, and after that was dry, covered them with Sakura Crystal Lacquer. These eggs could be really fun for your spring and Easter projects too! The Delight™ really is a delight to work with - it's very light weight, snow white and clean to mold. I love working with it!

I think it's cool when one idea doesn't work out the way that you think it will, but it leads you to something new on your creative journey.

Christmas Wishes

Merry Christmas Everyone. Today I couldn't imagine doing anything but a Christmas tag...so with the help of my Paperclay® and Viva Las Vegas Stamps I was able to create this three dimensional tag. The Basket is molded from Paperclay® and then layered over a roll of paper to bow it out at the lip.

The adorable little gnome nestled down in the arrangement is from Viva Las Vegas Stamps...isn't he just perfect for the holidays?

Christmas Collage Using VLVS

1. Roll out and create petals for the poinsettia (7 for the base - 5 for the 2 layer - 2 for the top). Put the petals together one layer at a time. Add little balls of clay for the center. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

2. Spray paint frame Brown. Use spray mount to adhere paper to the glossy side of the cereal box.

3. Add ribbon with Tacky Glue® to the frame. Cut Acetate to fit inside the frame.

4. Roll out more Creative Paperclay® and stamp into the clay. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

5. Add gold Mica Powder while the clay is still wet. It can also be added after the piece is dry. Add Paint.

6. Use stencil and stamp the snowflakes on the background paper.

7. Add ribbon and music notes with the mica powder. Using a gold string I attached the stamped piece to the background. Using Tacky Glue® everything else was mounted together.

Creative Paperclay® Christmas Tree with Viva Las Vegastamps!

You may have noticed our team was challenged this month to use Creative Paperclay® with Viva Las Vegastamps! I love rubber stamping so this was a fun challenge for me.

Here is the Christmas tree I created using both Creative Paperclay® and Viva Las Vegastamps! The stamps I used are from the Swirl Plate #1333!

I gathered my supplies (see list below). The base of my tree is a Styrofoam cone. To plan the sizes I needed I precut paper into three layers for the size of cone I was using. Using straight pins to help, I pinned each player to the cone. Make sure to have a little extra length on the top layer to create the point at the top.

I roll my clay out on transparencies, this way I can leave them on the sheet and move them around easily. The Creative Paperclay® was rolled between spacers, about 1/8th of an inch thick and cut to a 4-1/2 inch strip for the bottom of the tree (depends on the layer working on). Then carefully stamped with swirls over and over until the piece of clay is filled with swirls. Then cut the clay into strips. There are: eleven 4-1/2 x 1-1/2, nine 4 x 1 and seven 3 x 1, finally on angel. Set aside the clay to dry, usually 24 hours, maybe more depending on humidity.

While waiting for the clay to dry give the Styrofoam cone a quick coat of paint. Once all the clay pieces have dried paint each one green. Set aside to dry.

After the first coat of paint is dry cover with gold paint be sure to get it in all the crevasses, then wipe the excess with a rag or paper towel. Set aside to dry.

Now liberally apply tacky glue to the back of each strip of Creative Paperclay® attach to the Styrofoam cone, overlapping the strips and holding in place with straight pins. When you get to the top layer you will need to trim the top so the strips are tapered. Use a rubber band or twist tie to hold the top together at a point. Add the angel, cover with gold Stickles. Allow to dry overnight or longer.

Touch up an edges that may be exposed with gold paint. Now you are ready to add your tree to your holiday decor.

Ornament Card

Hi everybody, It's Edie,
I have been looking forward to December all year! Not only is it Christmas/Yule time, but this December meant my husband got to come HOME!!!!!!

He is in the Navy and has been stationed in Bahrain (unaccompanied) for the past two years. We have been separated for much of that time, but he came home for good on December 2, and I am THRILLED!!!!

I normally handle deployments very well and I have learned to cope with him being gone most of the time. This time, however, I have felt like my life has been split in half and like I have been on hold waiting for his return. I'm not sure if it is because this separation was so long or because of the unexpected, unhappy way I had to leave Bahrain. I felt like my life was ripped in half and I have been on hold waiting for the other half to catch up.

Now that he is home, at least for the time being, I FINALLY feel whole and like my house is a home again. He really does complete me, LOL :D

All of these thoughts about home and the upcoming holidays inspired me to create a holiday card and ornament that can be given as a gift or displayed in your own home. It would be perfect as a Holiday card for someone special on your mailing list but it would also be great to keep on hand for unexpected guests or for those people you want to give a little something to, but not spend alot.

For this project I used Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material to create the ornament and I incorporated Viva Las Vegas Stamps on the card. I used the brick wall stamp for the chimney's as well as the large pocket chimney on the inside of the card.

To make the ornament I rolled out my Creative Paperclay® and cut the shapes out using a template I cut from basic printer paper. I poked holes at each joint, painted all of the parts and used jump rings to connect all of the pieces. It is important to use THREE jump rings at each joint, otherwise your pieces will not hang straight. You can view the full video tutorial below.

The 'fur' trim on the coat, hat, boots and the beard was made using a cotton ball and don't forget to add plenty of GLITTER :D

For the card I painted the background and the houses using Neocolor II watercolor crayons and the Viva Las Vegas brickwall stamp and archival ink for the chimneys.

Once the card is complete, tuck your ornament into to pocket and viola'! It's ready to go. Don't forget to poke a hole in the top of the ornament so it can be hung on the tree :D

I loved this ornament so much, I decided to keep it and hang it on my tree, LOL, but I DID make some to give as gifts as well :D

It's December, and in some places (not San Francisco where I live) there is snow and snow people. Here is a tutorial making a fun snowman ("Mr. Blizzard"). The main ingredient is Creative Paperclay ®.

Ingredients for fun:
Creative Paperclay ® Modeling Material
3 sizes of foam ball
bamboo skewer
glue
wire hangers
hand-dyed bottle brush tree
mini garland
acrylic paint
glitter
wood base
floral tape
3" screws
decorations and trinkets that you already have

First I cut a smidge off the bottom of the largest foam ball so it would sit well. Then I skewered the balls together with glue between them.

Next, I opened the wire hangers up, straightened them and stuck 5 through holes I made in the middle foam ball with another skewer. (I had to then use a chopstick to make the hole big enough for the wires.)

I wrapped the wires with floral tape all the way to the ends and around the fingers to bind the wires together and finish the fingers. Bend the arms and position the fingers as you would like. Paint and seal the arms with browns to resemble branches.

I used a pasta machine to roll the modeling material and used a paint brush to paint glue on the balls right before adding the Creative Paperclay ®. Keep water nearby (I use an old butter tub) to wet your fingers and tools when blending.

Cover the entire body with modeling material making eyes, mouth or any other details you want. I pushed a rubber heart stamp into the wet material to add a nice touch. Let dry.

[Note: if you get any cracks as the material dries, simply paint some glue into the crack and add some more paperclay.

When dry, sand and paint (gesso first if you like). I added a bit of wire hanger pushed into the nose to support the large carrot (also made of Creative Paperclay ®).

I painted 2 coats of white acrylic paint. I sprinkled glitter in the second coat of wet paint. I painted the eyes and sealed with a matte finish coat on the arms and eyes. I used some cut up skewer bits for the coal mouth.

I painted and sealed a wood base like a holly leaf. I pre-drilled 3 holes in the base and put 3 long screws about 3" long each from the bottom into the body of the snowman (with glue) to secure it to the base.

Now comes the fun of "accessorizing". I created a wreath from the mini garland, decorated the bottle brush tree and top hat. A piece of an old silk tie is his scarf.

This one took some time and we're keeping him! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. You can make just about anything with Creative Paperclay ®.

Steampunk Christmas with Viva Las Vegas Stamps

I'm really not much of a stamp user so this month's tutorial was a bit of a challenge for me. I decided to create a Christmas card with a bit of a Steampunk look. I love just about anything Steampunk and Viva Las Vegas Stamps has Steampunk stamps that are fantastic! I'm using Item 16006 Plate 1273 and Creative Paperclay®.

(Note - This card was painted with metallics and metallic paint is impossible to take pictures of. The background color is a light gold, not brown. The ornaments are copper, silver and gold.)

Materials:
Viva Las Vegas Stamps Item 16006 Plate 1273
Creative Paperclay®.
Acrylic paints
Water color paper cut to size 5" x 7"

1. I first rolled out my paperclay to about 1/4" thick. I then used my stamps and pressed them into the clay to make tiny gear ornaments for my card. Then I cut out each stamped clay piece with an exacto knife. Let these "ornaments" dry.
2. While the clay was drying I painted a Christmas tree on my water color paper using thinned out acrylic paints. You can paint whatever you want using colors you like. I wanted to stay with a metal look so I first washed the paper with a very thinned out light gold. While the paper was still damp I painted the tree using 3 shades of green. (Actually, I just jabbed and splashed the brush around on the paper till I got a tree shape I liked)
3. I wanted to use the stamps to actually stamp gears onto the tree so I painted the surface of the stamps with my metalic paints and stamped them onto the paper. The gold was a bit light but the copper worked nicely.
4. Once the clay ornaments were dry I painted them and then glued them onto the tree.

I hope you enjoyed this quick little crafting idea using Viva Las Vegas Stamps in a little bit different way.

Decorative Embellishment

1. Take a piece of Creative Paperclay and roll it into a small ball.

2. Press the ball of clay into a mold of your choice.

3. Let it sit overnight to harden.

4. Once clay has hardened, paint as desired.

I created a tag to go along with the box. The stamps are from Viva Las Vegastamps. I've used Singing Trio and Church in Winter.

Bottle Doll Tutorial

Lately, beerbottles and root beer bottles are my favorite body armatures. I am currentlyworking on a series of holiday inspired dolls. Here’s a tutorial on how tobuild a doll with Creative Paperclay and a glass bottle.

What To Do

11. If you are using a bottle with a label on it,you may soak the bottle and remove the label. I prefer not to as it makes iteasier for costuming later.

22. Cover the Styrofoam ball in a layerof Creative Paperclay.

33. Place the ball on the bottle top andpress slightly to help the ball stick.

44. Take a small lump of clay, roll itout a bit in your hand, and flatten in. Place this clay directly below the ballon the bottle neck. Blend in with your fingers…use dabs of water to help yousculpt. Make this nice and smooth. Add more clay to the neck if necessary.

55. Continue to cover the bottle neck inCreative Paperclay. Creative Paperclay adheres remarkable well to glass.

66. Take a quarter-size ball of clay, cutin half with a butter knife or pottery sharp tool. Add one half to either sideof the bottle neck…these lumps of clay will become the doll’s shoulders.

77. You made need to make slip to fill increvices and cracks and to also adhere the clay to itself. To make slip, take asmall bit of clay, dip it in water so that it is paste-like.

88. Once your shoulders are applied, feelfree to use your fingers to sculpt the body shape you desire. Don’t be afraidto add many layers of Creative Paperclay!!!

99. Take your sharp tool or toothpick andmake holes from the top of the shoulders to the bottom in a diagonal fashionfrom front to back. Dip the tool in a bit of water and twist the tool insidethe hole to make it smooth.

110. Take your wire and measure out two10-12 inch lengths. Fold each wire in half, hold the loose ends with yourfingers or needle nose pliers and twist the loop end with your hand. Do thisuntil the entire length of the wire is twisted to your liking.

111. Place these wires into the holes youmade through the shoulders. Keep the wire straight for now. Determine how longyou want your doll’s arms to be and cut off any excess with the wire cutter.

112. Roll out a snake of CreativePaperclay…about 10 inches long. Fold in half and cut. Make one end of eachsnake a hand, round the other end for a shoulder. Let dry for 10 minutes andthen place over wire you’ve placed through the shoulder holes.

113. I always shape my arms in a roundfashion…sculpt your arms in any way it suits you!

114. Add facial features and hair to yourdoll. I use my thumbs to make eye socket, a lump for the nose with a couplelittle nostrils, round bits of clay for cheek bones, leaf shaped lump of clayfor lips, and twisted strips of clay for hair.

115. Allow your newly sculpted doll to dryfor one to two days depending on your climate. It takes at least two days herein New England!

Creative Paperclay meets Viva Las Vegas Stamps

Good morning all,

Today I am going to show you how to use your stamps with Creative Paperclay®. Recently our paperclay DT was asked if we would be interested in teaming up with VivaLasVegas Stamps and create a project using both items together. I jumped at the chance because not only do I love using paperclay and stamps but merging them would be a lot of fun. I've stamped words into my paperclay before with great results, but this time I went with an image and totally love the outcome.
So I began with my wing stamps that I ordered from Viva Las Vegas...(so many to choose from) and stamped them into the paperclay.

After the clay dried for a few minutes I cut the excess off around the wings.

then I painted them with white acrylic paint. I painted

a bit of glue diluted with water around the edges of

the wings and added some glitter to create:

this super cute ornament. I added a peachy keen face

to the glass ornament and then hot glued the wings to

the back of the ornament. Isn't this cute?

Golden Christmas Bowl

Hi! Its Me Debbie again.

I don't know about you but I love gold at Christmas. I wish everything twinkled and shone and there was real gold and silver and gems everywhere. But unfortunately that is just not a reality for most of us little people.....

But wait! Lets fake it and make a golden bowl out of Creative Paperclay®!

Please note: this bowl cannot be washed in water. It cannot be put in the dishwasher.

You will need:

Time
1 and half blocks of 8oz Creative Paperclay®
Gold and Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint
rubber stamps by Viva Las Vagas Stamps (I used unmounted "Three Wise Men" and "Decorative Frieze")
Clear embossing powder with heat gun and Versamark Pad.

Today I am going to share the tutorial on how to create this piece. Throughout December you will see our team working with our clay, of course, but we are partying along side Viva Las Vegas Stamps so you will be seeing us pull those out for use on our projects this month! Very exciting stuff!

Supplies for this project:
Creative Paperclay®
Body Parts stamps from Viva Las Vegas Stamps
Glossy black and Glossy red spray paint
black gem stone
knife
wire
frame

Begin by flattening out a portion of the clay. You want it no more than 1/4" thick...a bit less is good.

Stamp your images into the clay leaving some space around the border of each image.

Once you have stamped them all, use a craft knife to cut around the border of each image. It is best to go slowly and use an up and down motion so you don't drag the wet clay and distort the image.

Carefully remove the extra clay and allow to dry completely. This can take 24-48 hours.

Once the pieces are dry, use a set of files to sand the edges to smooth.

Paint the pieces with glossy red spray paint (a bit too much) and then hit with a heat gun to get a bit of a mottled, blotchy effect.

Use a stick pin to gently poke holes in each part and then create the twisted wire joints.

Add a wire hanger at the top and add the gem stone as the heart.

Spray paint the IKEA frame black and allow to dry.

Hang the puppet in the frame to complete.

Tealight Aquarium with Creative Paperclay® Fish

It’s December! And it seems like every year, I end up at a party

where an unexpected guest is the only person who doesn’t receive

a gift.

I like to have something on hand for those occasions, but I don’t

want to spend a lot of time or money. Since this is for someone unexpected, I try to keep it generic in nature, because I won’t

know what holiday, if any, the person celebrates.

I saw a Ferrero Raffaello Almond Coconut Candy Holiday Box,

and my idea was born. It was terrible eating those candies,

just to get the box, but we all have to make sacrifices, lol!

(If you really want to be nice, you can give the candy along

with the aquarium. Personally, I’m not that nice!)

Supplies:

Creative Paperclay®
Viva Las Vegas Steampunk Fish Stamp-Item 15985 or Plate 1272
A ‘found’ box with window (see my Raffaello box)
Flameless LED Tea light
Blue Tissue Paper
Robin’s Nest Orchid Dewdrops
Blue RickRac & Ribbon that matches the Blue Tissue
A sheet of 12 x 12 Scrapbook Paper
Stazon Teal Blue Ink Pad
ClearSnap Smooch Pearlized Accent Inks- Gold Lame & Molasses
White Glue & Two way Tape
Small rolling pin or something similar
Wood or Acrylic block
Scissors

The Fish:

1. Roll a ball of Creative Paperclay® about the size of the fish’s body.

2. Roll the ball out larger than the entire stamp, then press flat with a wood or acrylic block to even the thickness.

3. Goop up the fish stamp with ink, and stamp it into the moist Creative Paperclay®. Run your rolling pin over the stamp to get an even impression.

4. Cut the fish out with your scissors, and place the leftover Creative Paperclay® in a plastic bag.

5. Paint portions of the stamp with the Gold Lame Smooch ink and portions with the Molasses Smooch ink. Leave some ink

color and natural Creative Paperclay® showing so that you

get a sort of tarnished metal look.

6. Leave the fish to dry overnight.

The Box:

1. Cut away any bits that obscure the window.

2. Cover the box with pieces cut from the 12x12 paper.

I used a combination of the white glue and two-way tape for this.

3. Completely cover the window with the blue tissue, gluing along

the edges. I chose to place it on the outside of the box, because

I like the shadowing that you get. It is more fragile this way,

so you may prefer gluing the tissue inside.

4. Glue the ribbon along the top & bottom of the tissue for a

‘ripply look’.

5. Glue the rickrack along the top of blue tissue.

6. Glue the dried Creative Paperclay® fish on the tissue.

7. Glue some dewdrops on the tissue for a ‘bubbly’ look.

The Finished Piece:

Place the Tealight inside for a luminary. I found that if I left the lid

off, my Ferrero Raffaello caught and reflected light from overhead,

so that even without the Tealight, the tissue glows a bit.

LED Tealights are pretty safe, but please, make sure the light isn't touching the box, and don't leave it lit while unattended. It's those exceptions that cause fires!

If you like the luminary idea but don't want the aquarium, the stamps on Viva Las Vegas Steampunk Plate 1272 are wonderful for the purpose. I used a pound cake box for this second luminary, using vellum instead of tissue, and spreading Creative Paperclay® over the front of the box. I just wish I had had room to add the Steampunk Camel!

Christmas crafting with Creative Paperclay®!!

Hello everyone! I know it's been a little while since my last post but I have a husband who has had back surgery and for the past three weeks I've been the nurse and gopher around here. I finally made the time to work with my Creative Paperclay® though. Yay! My thoughts as I'm sure many others has turned to the Christmas Season. I saw a picture a week or so ago of a Santa that just really appealed to me, so I thought I would try to make my own version of that jolly old Elf! I started out with Creative Paperclay®, some styrofoam (a cone and a ball) and a piece of dowel. Something I didn't show in the original picture is some aluminum foil which I used for the base of the hat.

I took many pictures but had a hard time saving them and uploading them, this go round. But essentially what I did was attach the ball to the cone using the piece of dowel and some glue. I then rolled out my clay and molded it around the cone and then the ball. This was the base to which I added the facial features. I molded a hat out of aluminum foil and glued it to the head and covered it with clay. After I added all the little details it looked like this:

I do need to add that I used glue under each piece of clay that I adhered to something beside itself. He's already looking cute isn't he? After I got him to this point and he had dried, all he required was painting and sealing. Voila', now here's a super cute Santa Claus!

Creative Paperclay Verdi Angel Ornament

Do you like making your own Christmas ornaments? Here's one that I made using Creative Paperclay® modeling material. I had a pair of antique cherubs that I love, and thought they would be perfect as my model.

I made a mold of my angel using Amazing Mold Putty. Through trial and error, I figured out that my original angel had too many undercuts, and to make a cast of the full original just didn't work out how I had planned. But, my angel head, was perfect. So I just added the modeling material to that portion of the mold - making sure to press it firmly into all the details. I let it dry completely and then removed it.

I painted an undercoat of Creative Inspirations Paint in Emerald all over the cherub and let this dry.

Next, I rubbed Viva Decor Inka Gold (which is kind of waxy) all over the angel. Only little bits of the green base showed after I did this - and really helped to accentuate the fine details. I cut some wings using a Tim Holtz die and glued them to the back of the ornament.

I added a loop and bow to hang the finished piece, and now it's ready for my tree (although I'm not ready for my tree!)

A Thankful Weekend

Happy Thanksgiving weekend! I hope everyone is having a blessed weekend with family and friends. I'm so excited to share my first project with you for our amazing design team.

This is a little frame I created that I took as a hostess gift for my mother for Thanksgiving dinner. The shining star of this project is the acorns and yeap they were created with Paperclay®.

They actually were so easy to create. I used a muffin tin I had and just pressed Paperclay® into the mold. I let it set up overnight and the released it from the mold. I left the acorns to dry a few day then spray painted them brown. Once the paint was dried I rub with a bit of Inka Gold rub to highlight and they were ready to adhere to my frame.

I look forward to see you next month...and until then keep creating.

It Would Take a Man 600 Years...

If you did not get the quote you have never seen the movie Shawshank Redemption with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman (highly recommended if you have not seen it). Christmas is just around the corner and I have been working frantically on Christmas gifts for friends and family which leads me to this design team project. I can not guarantee that there won't be Shawshank quotes throughout this posts.

What do you get for guy friend who has everything? My husband said it would be cool if you could replicate something from a movie. The wheels instantly started turning because I have already made him the TIME Man of the Year Mirror from The Big Lebowski. My husband started to quote Shawshank, which is not uncommon in my house and I knew I had to make the "Bible" with the rock hammer cut out. Don't worry I did not cut a Bible (my husband would not let me buy a bible to cut up). So I had to go to plan B which was taking an old Thesaurus and cutting the shape of a rock hammer into the Thesaurus. I had no idea that cutting the same shape into repeated pages would be this time consuming (I went through 6 Exacto Knife Blades). It took me close to 3 hours to cut all of the pages I needed. I will say disposing of my evidence was much easier than toting it out to the yard a handful at a time.

Since the rock hammer would not work without the altered "bible" the pictures of the "Faux" Bible are first.

Not mine but what I wanted mine to look like.

The Thesaurus as you can see I spilled coffee on it when I was in college so it was well used.

Three hours worth of work and a huge mess.

I distressed the book with sand paper and paint. I added a little Tim Holtz Tea Dye Ink to the outside to really age the book cover.

I needed a rock hammer to go on the inside of the book and removable but not change the weight of the book. What better way to show off the versatility of Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material than to make a rock hammer for my book (I am hoping the people at Creative Paperclay® are Shawshank fans). The rock hammer was actually really easy took more time to dry than to create and paint. I also forged the inside message Andy wrote to the Warden (I am actually quite proud of that) because honestly it would not work with out that message.

Materials:
Styrofoam (I used flower Styrofoam)
Dowel Rod
Exacto Knife
Sharpie® Marker
Aluminum Foil
Creative Paperclay® Modeling Material
Fondant Roller
Sculpting Tool
End of an unsharpened pencil
Paint

1. Cut foam in shape of a rock hammer. If you use the template for the book keep in mind the foam should be at least 1/4" smaller than the template.

2. Cut dowel to fit in book and also have about 1" inside the foam. Push dowel inside the foam.

3. Cover the foam and dowel with tinfoil. This will help adhere the clay to the base without seperation.

4. Roll out clay. Cover the base with clay. Refine add detail - to recreate the nails in the rock hammer take an unsharpened pencil end and push down, repeat on the other side trying to line up as closely as possible. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

5. Paint rock hammer to resemble the rock hammer in the movie.

I guess really you do need one of these in order for it to work...

Creative Paperclay® Charms

I am really excited to be a part of this amazing Creative Paperclay® design team. With the holidays approaching it is time for celebrations, parties and gift giving. I thought I would share a few of my tricks while making holiday charms that could be used at your own party drink charms, given as a gift, decorate a gift bottle or gift. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to make these to allow for drying times.

CUTTING CHARMS

To start gather supplies: See list at the end of this post. Note: Once you use items from the kitchen with clay the tools should be used exclusive for clay or other craft projects in the future!

Work on a flat surface, a glass surface seems to work the best. Tip: I place a transparency on the glass surface to allow easy moving. Sorry you can't see the transparency, believe me it is there! Work with small amounts of Creative Paperclay®, first roll it into a smooth ball, then between the spacers roll out the clay. For spacers I used 3 pieces of chip board taped together with Miracle Tape, making them about a 1/4 of an inch thick. The spacers help keep my clay a consistent thickness. While working with Creative Paperclay® be sure to keep the unused portion of the clay sealed or covered in plastic so it doesn’t dry out!

Cut your charms, press hard so that you feel the glass surface below the cutters. Tip: Gently pull the extra clay from around the cutters while the cutter is still in the clay.

Repeat the cutting process.

Add dimension to your charms with really small cutters. For the Christmas tree add ornaments and star topper.

Using an inexpensive paint brush add water to the surface of the charm and to the back of the piece being added to the charm. This creates an area that the clay will adhere to itself. You can use glue if you prefer.

If it is difficult to remove the small pieces from your surface, use a tool to remove them. Tip: Leave the cutter imbedded in the clay while lifting from the surface. This helps the clay keep its form.

Using the end of the paint brush put a hole in each charm.

Set aside to dry, this could take from 24 to 48 hours depending on the humidity and temperature. Mine took 48 hours as we do not turn up the heat in our house. I like to let it dry naturally. If you're in a hurry, you may put your unpainted pieces in a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes or until dry. Watch CLOSELY!

Halfway through the drying time turn your charms over.

PREPARE CHARMS FOR PAINTING

Sand the rough edges gently with an emery board. For a sealed surface paint charms with a matte medium or gesso and set aside to dry.

PAINTING

Paint your charms with acrylic paints. Gold was used here. The acrylic paints can be any that you may have around. Set aside to dry.

For a little sparkle, add glitter using Ice Stickles and a bit of red Stickles for a splash of color. Seal the paint and glitter with 3D Crystal Lacquer set aside to dry overnight.

WIRE WRAP

Prepare the wire wrap for the charm using jewelry wire and beads for added bling.
