Games of Thrones Mini Dragon Egg Necklace

Here you go, Game of Thrones fans—wearable art that Khaleesi would be proud to model!!

I started with a small ball of Creative Paperclay®, and formed it into an egg shape.

Next, I rolled out a small piece of clay until it was very thin—between 1/32" and 1/16" of an inch thick. (Oops!! There was leftover glitter from my last project on my work mat. See it in the clay? It really doesn't matter for this project, because the final product gets glazed.)

I used a slurpie straw as a cookie cutter to cut out the scales. These straws are about twice the size of a normal soda straw. A regular straw will work, there will just be more scales needed to cover the surface of the egg.

I began layering the scales starting at the bottom of the egg. 

I continued layering the scales, one row after another, until I reached the top of the egg. I used the smaller, regular soda straw for the last row of scales. Last step before drying is to add a screw eye to the top of the egg.

After the eggs were dry, I painted them with acrylic paints in dragon egg colors—cream, green, and black red. When the paint was dry, I brushed on a small amount of gold mica powder from Terri Sproul's  Mixers Jewel Effects Color Set Mixer to add the highlights.

Witch's Spellbook with Rachel Whetzel

Hello, out there in Creativeland!! It's Rachel Whetzel, here. It's starting to feel like Fall here in Oregon, and Fall puts me in a spooky mood, so I took some inspiration from the interwebs, and decided to create a Spell Book to add to my Witch's Apothecary Halloween display! 

WHAT YOU'LL NEED to make your own canvas:

• An old phone book
• Creative Paperclay®
• Sandpaper
• Paints. I use Folk Art acrylic craft paints.
• Stain. I used Valspar antiquing stain
• Paint brushes

Get your phonebook sanded up, to help your clay cling to the surface. 

 Because my phonebook had colored pages I didn't want to show, I painted the outside of the pages to make them all look uniform.

 Then, I wet my cover, and started building the "cover" of the book.

 I also carved the words "Book of Spells" onto the cover while the clay was wet, and then painted the cover black once my clay was dry.

 Sand your cover to smooth it out, and create a leathery look to the overall piece. I used gold paint to highlight the title of the book, and wiped off the excess.

 Here's the finished piece, with some of my other Creative Paperclay® pieces from years past.

Shhh!!! Don't Wake the Dragon!

He is a dragon - his name shall be Hercules.

Hercules is a baby dragon.... This little fellow doesn't sleep with his eyes open yet as the experience of having his treasures stolen hasn't come into question. The key is for some other treasure chest I have no idea where and he has kept his favorites near him.

Here are some close ups....

If you play CastleVille on facebook this little fellow maybe a little similar.... CastleVille has baby Dragons!!! And that is what I modeled him off. ;)

I think he may have a bit of a cheeky look to him.... Maybe he is not sleeping at all and is just tricking us!

I actually use him as a pen holder.....

Here is a two part video Part one is how to mold him out of Creative Paperclay® and the 2nd is how to paint him up with Terri Sproul Mixers.

The final tips I didn't put on the video...
(just so our fave readers here at the blog can have some special info)

After the video was made I painted an additional layer of watery Acrylic paint (olive green)

Then put over top a layer of Terri Sproul Mixer - Bronze only. 

Drying in-between all layers.

This added depth in the finish of the final product.
