Creative Paperclay® Art Reflects Life Canvas

Hi Friends: It's time for another mixed media canvas featuring Creative Paperclay® and showcasing the versatility of this amazing product. For this project, I used Creative Paperclay® as a background on my canvas, to cover and enhance a plain dollar store mirror, and in various molds used as accents on the canvas.

Facelift with Creative Paperclay®

This piece started out as a demo in one of my books. I found it while cleaning out my studio and thought it could use a little dimension so I created Creative Paperclay® trees. Often when looking at an old piece you can see other possibilities. Apologies. The starter picture did not turn out.

SUPPLIES

Creative Paperclay®
Sculpting tools
Exacto knife
Acrylic paint

I started by dampening the surface for added adhesion when I applied the clay.

Once the clay was laid down, I brayered it flat and trimmed off the areas that I didn't want with an exacto knife. Using my clay sculpting tools, I scribed lines into the clay then smoothed it slightly with water on my finger tips. When dry I added acrylic paint.

Dimensional embellishments add to the visual interest of your art.

How to create a hollow Creative Paperclay® art doll

Wow, it is almost summer!

Weather is finally warming up, birds are chirping, and kids are playing outside. In this June tip I will include the way I make my art dolls hollow so that they are lighter and can be attached to the painted canvas to be easier displayed. I love making these girls: they are so much fun to make and they look great inside shadow boxes. Here is the process I came up with to make it a lot easier to remove all the inside armature without destroying the piece. It is easy to do so if you follow my instructions.

Materials

Creative Paperclay®

Heavy Duty Aluminum foil

Paper Scotch Tape

I like to use heavy duty aluminum foil because it is a lot stronger and thus easier to manipulate to create a strong armature for working on your art doll.

Find a shape that you want to use as the base for your figure and lightly shape and recreate it by manipulating the aluminum foil.

You can use your hands, hammers or the tape to hold the shape in place.

Make sure to move the piece around and that it lays flat - this will help you be able to create a even surface so you can later easier add your sculpture to the canvas.

Turn the piece over and create a string with the scotch tape so you can later attach a pen, pencil, or chopstick (something strong to assist you in pulling the final piece away from the armature).

Grab another sheet of aluminum foil.

Lay it flat over the already sculpted aluminum foil armature.

Press around the armature very lightly.

Work all the corners and edges so they are clean with the flat surface of the table.

Now you can roll a clay sheet to a 1/4 thickness and wrap it around the armature.

Make sure you press the clay all around the armature to make it lay flat, then set it aside to dry. I recommend you let it dry overnight or set it in the oven at very low heat for an hour or two depending on the size and thickness your sculpt.

This is how the back of the piece will look once the clay is laid over your foil armature:

Once the piece is dry, attach the pen or stick of your choice to help you remove the main armature core from your piece.

The image above shows how your figure will look like once the core is removed. Go ahead and carefully pull the aluminum foil away. Now it is normal that you may find a damp soft spot under this foil layer so be very careful when removing it.

This is how the final dry Creative Paperclay® hollow piece should look.

Cindy's June tip for saving money.....

Hi everyone, and welcome.

Today I am sharing my June tip/technique. I have a quick tip to help save you some money (we can all use that right?) and have some creative fun at the same time.

This is an idea I came up with while looking to get myself some smaller tools to sculpt with. To start I did what most of us do right - I went to google, lol... I found many people making their own tools, but out of aluminium and brass tubing. This didn't seem economical enough for me, so I decided to create my own from a few household items and paperclay...

Supplies:

Creative Paperclay®

Large paperclips

Small paperclip

Sewing Pins

Silks Acrylic Glaze Spiced Pumpkin

Silks Acrylic Glaze Rich Cobalt

Directions:

I began with my Creative Paperclay® and some basic household items.... some sewing pins and oversized paperclips...

I removed the heads from the pins and then bent the ends slightly.... this is to ensure that they don't pull out of the formed clay handle once dry....

I applied clay both underneath the row of pins and then on top of the pins

I kept adding clay and smoothing it out until I was happy with the size and shape, and set it aside to dry...

Next I began with one of the large paperclips, opened it out, and left the curves of the paperclip in tack...

I embedded the paperclip into a lump of clay...

smoothed the clay around the paperclip, and again set aside to dry...

For my final tool, I used some jewellery pliers to make smaller loops from my paperclip...

I again embedded the shaped paperclip into a lump of clay...

and smoothed the clay around to form the handle....

Once again I set it aside to dry...

Once the clay was dry I grabbed out my Silks Acrylic Glazes and painted my new tools... Naturally I chose two of my favourite colours, Spiced Pumpkin and Rich Cobalt...

So with a very small amount of of Creative Paperclay® and some basic household items I have four new tools to start creating with and I can't wait to get started.... look out for my next Creative Paperclay® blogpost where I will make use of my new tools.

How to Make a Creative Paperclay® Hedgehog

Hello! Today I will show you how to make this cute little hedgehog using Creative Paperclay®.

To make this hedgehog you will need the following supplies:

Creative Paperclay
Styrofoam egg- 5 7/8" x 3 7/8"
Aluminium foil
Glue gun and glue sticks
Wire mesh
Sand paper
Wire brush
Clay tools
Water
Gesso
Acrylic paint: I used Golden Paints: Burnt Sienna, Titan Buff, Carbon Black and Light Magenta
Paint brushes

Make 3 dimensional embellishments

Hi, It's Jenn here and today I would like to share with you how to make your own 3-dimensional embellishments using Creative Paperclay® and some other items you may not have used before or even thought of! You can create so many things with embellishments! Add them to mixed media, cards, tags, and so much more! The possibilities are endless.

So Let's get started with some of my favorites!

Silicone Molds

Pictured above are some different types of molds I like to use.

To Use: Always brush your mold with some cornstarch lightly. This makes it much easier for you to remove final pieces.

Next press clay into mold firmly to pick up all of the detail.

In this mold: the smaller piece is paperclay and the larger is Delight. I let them dry for a few minutes at least and then remove.

You can create several at a time and save them for later projects as I do. You can then paint them and add to your projects! Make sure you allow pieces to dry completely before painting. Apply gesso before color as well.

Cookie Cutters

I like to use metal cookie cutters to create basic shapes. You can use them in combination with pieces from molds as I did above as well.

Flat Texture Stamps

For these I used Delight. They make great flat backgrounds for mixed media projects to add texture and dimension. When using these, brush with cornstarch to avoid clay sticking.

Fondant Punches

These are great with Delight Air Dry Modeling Compound ® and Creative Paperclay Modeling Material ® ! These are found in cake decorating departments at Michael's and Hobby Lobby stores. I like these because they have a plunger and once the clay is in them and you press the plunger it releases the clay very easily. They come in a variety of shapes.

Lastly, I would like to show you a few tools I use in addition to normal clay working sets to help press, move and remove clay from cutters and molds.
