A Santa Ornament

Hello, welcome to another blog post! Today I am doing a recap of my Facebook Live show, Clay Talk, that aired on December 5th. In this episode, I did a live demonstration showing you how to make this adorable Santa ornament.

It is quite an easy project for any level of sculptor and you do not need a lot to get started. You will need Creative Paperclay® which is very affordable as well as some craft paints. I recommend Plaid Craft Paints and Mod Podge Sparkle as a varnish. A full supply list is below:

• foil
• something to add weight to the base of the sculpture (I used cat litter)

Making a Primitive Snowman using Creative Paperclay 

Hello everyone!  I am finally here with the finished tutorial!

I first just want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers in our time of need. They picked me up and I was bolstered by those who shared their experiences to reassure me.  I would like to share a little here as ya’ll have given me so much comfort.

Mark has not had another seizure and will be back to his Neurologist this week.  As far as any more manipulations of his spine and muscles will have to be performed under anesthesia with a Dr. present.  We can’t cost him any more seizures in trade for his treatment!  I will let them all know (medical persons) that this is the way it has to be…so says this mama and former nurse!  He is not tolerating the treatment, obviously.

Please continue to keep Mark in your prayers and thoughts as we continue to get to the bottom of his pain.  I’m sure you already are, as I have the very best followers on the planet!!!  Thank you!

 Supply list                              

Sculpting

*Creative Paperclay® (Check craft stores or online)

Your two hands

*Glass cutting board (must have a smooth side)

**Small bowl of water

*4” Styrofoam® egg (any craft store or online craft store)

*2” Styrofoam ball (same as above)

*1/4” X 4” dowel

* glue gun (I use Hot)

*Long Straight pin or corsage pin

*Damp Folded paper towel (on which to preserve extra clay)

*Damp cloth to keep unpackaged clay from getting dry

*Baby wipes to help keep hands from getting “caked” with clay and to wipe down your surface

*Sculpting tools (Ebay, Amazon - basic set)

*9-10 mm jingle bell (for embedding placement at a later step)

*A 6-7 mm and a Three 3mm black half pearl (I bought a pkg. of mixed sizes (I think I found them on Etsy) for marking eyes and mouth

*Long Straight pin or corsage pin (cutting tool and other uses) I found mine on Etsy.

Sanding

*Sanding Sponges (find on Kemper Dolls website) Personally I like the   blue ones in several grits

*Damp cloth for wiping (Helps to keep sanding dust contained and smooths clay surface

Painting

*Paint brushes (to start, a prepackaged set is fine)

*Small caps or medicine cups for paint pots

*Acrylic craft paint orange and off-white paint

*Small caps or medicine cups for paint pots

8*Acrylic craft paint orange and off-white paint

                                   Staining & Varnishing

*Min-Wax gel stain in Aged Oak (Home Depot in the 8oz size)

*Exam gloves (any drug store) you don’t want stain under your fingernails

* One disposable one I” wide foam paint brush

*Dry Wipe rags about 6-8” square (I cut up one of my husband’s old T-shirts!  Uh-Oh…here comes trouble….)

*Plenty of Q-tips

*Water soluble varnish in matte or satin (I use Delta Ceramcoat matte interior varnish)

                                           Glittering

*Gallon Baggy

*White glue (dilute slightly with H20 if too thick)

*Glitter (I used Recollections Snow {white} and Diamond Dust gold-ultra fine)

*Blue painter’s tape (to cover carrot nose while glittering)

                Embellishment and Mounting

*1 and ½ inch red miniature tinsel

*Two 6-7 mm black half pearls and Three 3 mm black half pearls

*Three 9-10 mm Jingle Bells

*Scarf or ribbon of choice

* Very thin rusty wire (about 22-24 gauge)

* 5” snips or scissors

*charm or clay “pop-out” mold for chest embellishment

*4 inch, beveled wooden plaque

*Black craft paint

*Super glue

How to Create a Christmas Ornament

Hello everyone! My name is Cinnamon Willis and I am going to show you how I created this ornament! I had some left over plaster disks laying around after working on another project and I wanted to see if I can get some use out of them. You won't need plaster to make this ornament, you can just use some foil, paper or whatever you would like to use for the middle and cover it with the Creative paperclay.


Supplies:

• Creative Paperclay®
• Acrylic paint
• Sanding paper
• Aleene's Original Tacky Glue
• Wool or whatever you would like to use for hair
• Pliers
• Flexible wire

This is some left over plaster from a previous project, I let it cure in the bottom of a plastic cup so that I could get this disk shape and use it later. Take whatever you are using for the core of your piece and cover it with paperclay

Take your wire, tie it in a knot and then cover the knot with masking tape.

Take the knotted wire, put it in the back of the flat disk and cover it with clay. Bulk out the back of the head so that the wire sits smack in the middle of the piece. This ensures that the piece hangs right on the tree, if it is too far in the back the front will dip forward towards the floor.

Here I just started working on the face a bit. After working up the cheeks I sit the piece aside to let it dry for about 24 hours.

I find it easier to work in layers with paperclay. I let the first layer dry and then come back to work up more of the features like the eyes and mouth. I go through this process about four times before things start to look right for me.

Now that I am happy with the way things look with the face, I can begin to sand it down to get it to look smooth.

After smoothing down the piece with the sanding, you can paint your piece with your choice of acrylic paints. After you have painted the pieces spray with a protective clear coat.

I decided to use some of the wool that I brought from a project that was a done a few years prior. I needle felted the hair to help make the wigging process for my piece a bit easier.

Glue the hair onto the head with Aleene's craft glue. Set the piece aside to allow the glue to dry for another 24 hours. 

Once the glue on the hair is dry, fix as you would like. I just needle felted the hair in place.

This is a simple fun piece...

you can paint it whatever colors you like...makes a great Santa in reds

Supplies needed:

creative paperclay

paper mache Christmas tree cone

craft glue

rolling utensil

marking tool ( i use a needle or knife)

pencil

paint brushes

paper

makeup sponge

I use DecoArt 

gesso

Paints:

Driftwood

Hi-lite flsesh

Asphaltum

white

Staining Antique Medium

Oak Gel Stain

You can adapt to any size

I cut a circle out of paper 

trace circle on cone

I then mark off a hat of sorts 

Gesso hat white and body black

really just helps me with placement

roll out paperclay about 1/8" thick

I trimmed it to clean up edges

added glue

Placed on the face

Rolled out more clay pieces

added glue and placed on the face

with a needle i added marking of hair lines

added more bits and a mustache 

Make a ball and glue above mustache

I used the end of paint brush to make nose holes but you can leave them off 

roll a 1/2" snake 

it will be glued above nose all the way around hat

I use a stiff brush to make fur texture on the snake

let dry

I gessoed the beard, nose and fur of hat

let dry

paint nose 

paint body

 i mix a dab of paint with the staining medium

Paint on beard

using a makeup sponge i dab white paint over the staining medium

using gel stain i shade hat and around the beard

I made a bow and added a bell to top of hat
