Let's create a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Banner

Hi!,
I love that fall has finally come to North Texas. Chilly mornings, an extra large cup of coffee, and crafting on my patio. Pure Heaven!!

My inspiration for today's project comes from a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the dead) festival in my town of Denton Texas.

When the first of October comes to north Texas you start to see tons of sugar skull decorations. Getting ready for the celebration this year, I decided to create a sugar skull banner incorporating Creative Paperclay® for my potion shelf.

 Supply list
Creative Paperclay Delight
Sugar skull  cookie cutter
Heavy cardboard banner
9" of 36" wide fabric
Black felt
Colored hemp cord
Decoupage for fabric glue
Flowers with skulls
Corn starch
Acrylic paint (white, black, neon blue, neon pink, light purple)
Tacky glue
Scissors
Fabric pencil
Ruler

Lets get started

The skulls
  1.  Roll out your delight clay 1/4 inch. (Delight is much lighter than original paperclay and perfect for this type of banner)
  2. Dust the edge of your cookie cutter with corn starch
  3. Press cutter into clay. Lift out and lay flat piece on the table
  4. ( If you have a cookie cutter with details like mine, turn over the cutter and press the face imprint into clay)
  5. Make two more faces
  6. Set aside and let dry

    7. Paint the front and back of the skulls white and let dry
    8. Finish the features using your acrylic paints and set aside

The banner flags
  1. Use one of the banner flags as a template
  2. Lay fabric(wrong side up) on a table
  3. Using a ruler and a fabric pencil trace 1/4" edge extra around your template
  4. Glue the fabric on the cardboard.
  5. Snip of the corners
  6. Put glue on the fabric edges and fold them over
  7. Using the template cut a piece of black felt and glue it on the back

     8. Take 3 strands of colored hemp and braid them together

   9. Thread the cord through the banner pieces. (leaving room for the skulls)
10.Glue the skulls on the cords using tacky glue
11.Glue the flowers to the banner using tacky glue

Thanks for stopping by. I hope that you can be inspired to create a banner of your own.

Happy Creating,
Shari

Jess B's - Day of the Dead - Sugar Skulls

Hello Everyone

Yesterday we had a huge rain storm and the power went out!
Enough said. lol

Today I wanted to share my
Hispanic culture with you

In November Mexico celebrates
Dia De Los Muertos
Day of the Dead
Day of the Dead
(Spanish: Día de los Muertos)
is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it is a national holiday, and all banks are closed. The celebration takes place on November 1 and 2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skullsmarigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.
Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years and to an Aztecfestival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The holiday has spread throughout the world: In BrazilDia de Finados is a public holiday that many Brazilians celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. In Spain, there are festivals and parades, and, at the end of the day, people gather at cemeteries and pray for their dead loved ones. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe, and similarly themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.

Mexican Sugar Skull

Hello! My name is Rachel, and I'm so excited to be part of the new Design Team for Creative Paperclay® modeling material! Today, I'll be showing you my Mexican Sugar Skull made with Creative Paperclay®!
I love celebrating the Mexican holiday, Dia De los Muertos know by many as Day of the Dead. Contrary to the imagery of the holiday, Day of the Dead is a celebration of life. A time to remember loved ones that have passed with food, drinks, flowers, and lots of color. One of the traditional pieces of Day of the Dead is the Sugar Skull.

SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED:
First, I pressed my clay into the Sugar Skull mold.
Then I set it outside in the sun to dry. Drying time takes a bit longer when you use a mold, so this process took a couple days.
Once my clay was dry, I released it from the mold.
Connect the front and back pieces together using more Creative Paperclay®. Allow this clay to dry, and sand the whole piece to remove visible seams.
Now for the FUN part! Coat the skull in glue, and cover the wet glue with GLITTER. I used clear glitter for my piece, but you can use any color, because later, we'll be covering it with paint. Because of this, you could also use a fine sand to create the sugared look.
Once my glue was dry, and I was sure all of the skull was covered, I spray painted my skull. If you want to stay traditional with your skull, you could use white paint instead of blue like I used.
Once my spray paint was dry, I started adding the details of my skull using Acrylic Craft Paint. (my personal favorite is Folk Art Craft Paints.)
I think this little guy will be perfect sitting in the arms of my newest Day of the Dead Bride Art Doll made with Creative Paperclay® modeling material as well!
If you create a sugar skull, Please leave a comment with a link here, so I can come and visit to see! I would love for you to visit me at my "house" too!! Thank you so much for reading!!
